Medical devices and robots for neurological rehabilitation at the service of human well-being

We believe in improving people’s quality of life by applying the innovation of robotics to medical therapy. We design and develop medical devices and robots for neurological rehabilitation with the aim of achieving important motor recovery goals for individuals who have been affected by a stroke, head injury or who have undergone surgery.

The medical devices and the new robotic technologies offer stimulating, interactive and motivating rehabilitation scenarios for patients, at the same time giving an objective measurement of performance to the rehabilitator, allowing a faster and more effective achievement and retention of the best possible functional levels.

Our “Research & Development” section conceives original solutions every day, wearable and innovative medical devices, to take further steps towards the personal autonomy of each individual.

We are Humanware, a spin-off company of the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna of Pisa, made up of researchers and engineers with many years’ experience in the fields of Robotics, Mechatronics and of Virtual Reality.
Innovation underpins Humanware’s offer, the perfect nexus between research and the market, the academic world and business activities.

Motore, Ultra+, HumanGlove and Meka are only some of the medical devices that we have created throughout our history, assisting the patient and clinical staff in monitoring, functional assessment, diagnosis and rehabilitation therapies for the person and for clinical staff. We also operate successfully in the Information Technology market with a constant growth thanks to continuous investments in know-how and to the seriousness and efficiency with which we support our customers.
Humanware: robotics at the service of human well-being.

About us

Being innovative means first of all believing in your own abilities and in those of the whole team. Humanware is a modern and innovative company, based on the ideal conditions for developing the potential of each individual component. Together we collaborate every day with the same purpose: to make the lives of others better, supporting our technological innovation with the emotional intelligence and empathy which characterise us.

Andrea Scoglio

CEO

A graduate in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pisa, he worked as a contract researcher at the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna in Pisa. His lengthy experience in scientific research has led him to acquire commercial patents and the various scientific publications prove the high-quality level of his research.

In the mid-nineties he founded Humanware, born as a university spin-off, of which he has been the Sole Managing Director for over ten years. Involved for years in the technological and scientific aspects, for the last two years he has been focusing on the purely commercial aspects, with the aim of opening up new distribution channels in the international market.

Giovanni Cappiello

CTO

Giovanni Cappiello received the M. Sc. degree in Mechanical Engineer from the University of Pisa, in 2002, and the Ph.D in Robotics from the University of Genoa, in 2006. His major interests are in the field of mechatronic design components, such as artificial limbs for prosthetic and robotics or biomedical devices, as well as in the field of sensor technologies, such as development an customization of sensors.

He is skilled in CAD modelling and FEM analyses. He is an author of several scientific papers and filed patents as inventor. Member of IEEE RAS societies, in the 2006 he joined Humanware srl, where he, actually, is in charge of the Technical Sector as CTO of Humanware.

Zoran Curto

CIO

Zoran Curto received the Master’s Degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Pisa in 2006. His graduate thesis was on security algorithms for embedded systems. Inside Humanware he works on many of the company projects as a systems engineer, software analyst and software developer, and has been the technical representative of the company in several research projects.

He has worked on human interface devices in the fields of multimedia and neurological rehabilitation and he was also involved in the development of many of the devices produced by Humanware. He is also a co- inventor in some of the company patents. He has collaborated to the EU-funded research project CALLAS (Conveying Affectiveness in Leading-edge Living Adaptive Systems), has worked with the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna di Pisa on the MEMOS-2 system, a robotic system for neuro-rehabilitation, has been involved on the development of the MOTORE robotic platform for rehabilitation since its beginning.

His major interests are in the fields of interface design (user interfaces, human-machine interaction), embedded system design, machine learning and data analysis (especially regarding the company’s rehabilitation devices and their effects on patients). He is skilled in C++, C#, javascript, R, and database design.

Alberto Carbone

CTIO

Alberto Carbone received the Master degree in Telecommunications Engineering from the University of Pisa, Italy, in 2014. In 2014 he has collaborated with CAEN RFID for the design and implementation of new method of measurements for RFID devices.

In the 2015 he joined Humanware srl where he works on interface design, embedded system design, data analysis and visualization. He is skilled in software development (C/C++, javascript, Matlab, Simulink, and Python).

Luca Marconcini

COO

A graduate in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pisa, he was technical director of the BIEFFE group. He also held the role of manager of homologations and relations with the Ministry of Transport, head of the test laboratory, Quality System manager.

He was Operations Manager for Assembly Technologies Inc. (Toronto, Canada) for the construction of assembly lines and special machines for the automotive sector for the North American market.

He is currently working at Humanware where he holds the role of Operations Manager and is responsible for the Quality System and product certification.

Andrea Rossi

Production Officer

Andrea Rossi is a technician specialised in mechanical design. Specialised in engineering, assembly and testing, he has over ten years experience in the mechanical and robotics sectors. In the past, he was involved in managing and coordinating projects for customer companies, also carrying out structural analysis and managing product testing operations.

The thousands of hours of experience with machine tools and a strong predisposition for implementing products ensure he is an irreplaceable resource for the development of prototypes and their optimisation.
